We’ve just entered SMITE Season 5, and with it comes a ton of changes to the Conquest map, god balance, items, and more. We’ve already let you in on who we think will be the best mid lane gods in S5, but that’s not all you need to know if you want to dominate the Battleground of the Gods. You’ll also want to make sure you’re building your picks right.

If you’re piloting a mage in Update 5.1, we’ve put together some basic guilds for you that are suited to nearly any type of magical god you choose. From the burst damage dealers to the lifestealers and healers, there’s a build in this guide for you. Try out these item paths on your favorite mages and see how well you fare in Season 5 Conquest.

All-Purpose Mage Build

As we break into S5, the focus for mages (especially in the mid lane) will be on the mid-game phase. Losing Rod of Tahuti hurts most late-game burst mages — but with the  magical power curve being smoother than ever before, mages who shine in the mid game feel incredibly impactful right now. If that’s the kind of god you want to play,  this is the build for you.

  • Mage’s Blessing + Soul Reliquary
  • Shoes of the Magi
  • Book of Thoth
  • Spear of Desolation
  • Ethereal Staff
  • Obsidian Shard
  • Soul Reaver

This build works for just about any mage. It offers good burst damage with a bit of cooldown reduction, courtesy of Spear of Desolation. If you’re playing a god who doesn’t utilize a lot of mana early (like Scylla) or who heavily benefits from extra early damage that Soul Trap Provides (like Kukulkan), feel free to skip Mage’s Blessing and rush Book of Thoth.

You can also switch out Book of Thoth for Warlock’s Sash if you think you’re going to have a long laning phase where you’re guaranteed to build up stacks. And don’t forget to pick up Divine Ruin if there are healers on the enemy team!

Lifesteal Mage Build

We could have just called this “The Anubis Build”, since this build is tailored to his kit. But if you wanted to try and use the extra sustain it provides on a god like Sol or Agni, it could end up being effective.

  • Mage’s Blessing + Tiny Trinket
  • Shoes of the Magi
  • Bancroft’s Talon
  • Spear of the Magus
  • Typhon’s Fang
  • Soul Gem
  • Spear of Desolation

This build has two main power spikes. The first comes when you finish Bancroft’s Talon, and the second comes when you finish Typhon’s Fang. This second item has single-handedly put Anubis back on the viability map — and no mage build focused on lifesteal should go without it.

Utility & Healer Mage Build

Gods like Chang’e, Aphrodite, and Hel need power to be effective — but they also need some extra stats that traditional burst mages don’t really worry about. You can also use this build if you want to play something like Nox in the mid lane and focus on setting up your teammates instead of being the hard carry yourself.

  • Mage’s Blessing + Lost Artifact
  • Shoes of Focus
  • Chronos Pendant
  • Spear of Desolation
  • Rod of Asclepius
  • Ethereal Staff
  • Obsidian Shard

This build is focused on a combination of power and cooldown reduction, but you can easily trade out items like Ethereal Staff or Obsidian Shard for survivability items like Spirit Robe or Genji’s Guard. As a healer, staying alive is the most important thing you can build for — so keep that in mind as you pick up items.

If you’re playing a utility style non-healer, such as Janus or Nox, you can trade out the Rod of Asclepius for something like Soul Reaver or Soul Gem to boost your damage a bit higher.

Victory!

As you start learning the ropes in Season 5, these mage builds should help you dominate no matter which mage you pilot on the Battleground of the Gods. But before you jump into your first games, be sure to check out our guide to the S5 Conquest map so you can be prepared for all the changes and switch up your strategies accordingly.

It goes without saying that these builds are subject to change as balance changes occur after Update 5. 1 But we’ll be updating these builds as the meta shifts, so keep checking back to make sure you’re still building the right way. While you’re here, though, you can also check out our other build guides so you’re prepared for any role:
