Greetings SMITE esports fans!
Recently our league operations team has been monitoring the emerging situation around the COVID-19 coronavirus. After much internal discussion regarding the potential health risks of this outbreak, the Hi-Rez team has made the difficult decision to cancel our Phase 1 Circuit Playoff LAN event originally scheduled for this April. The health and safety of our players and staff are our utmost priority, and as such we cannot in good conscience expose them to the potential hazards of international travel at this time.
In spite of this decision, we are still planning to have an online playoff event to close out Phase 1 of the SCC/SOC.
At the conclusion of Phase 1 for these two circuits, we will host two separate online brackets — one that features the top teams in North America, and an identical one that features the top teams in Europe. The top Open Circuit teams in each region will still qualify for this event.
These regional playoffs will follow the same format as the originally planned Circuit Playoff LAN event:
- Six qualified teams for each region:
- Top 5 SCC
- Top 1 SOC
- Single-elimination bracket
- Best-of-five (Bo5) matches all the way through
- Top two SCC teams in each region get BYEs for Round 1 of the bracket.
Because we must separate North America and Europe for these online playoffs, the previously allocated $100,000 prize pool will be split between the two regions and the prizing structure will be reallocated among the participating teams. Our League Operations staff is working closely with our SCC participants to determine the best prizing structure. We’ll release updated prize pool information once those details are finalized.
We understand this decision is disappointing for players and fans, but we appreciate your support as we continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak. Follow us on Twitter @SmitePro for more updates as this situation unfolds.
